Why the UIDAI Helpline Number Is Automatically Saved on Many Android Phones in India

Only days subsequently TRAI Chairman RS Sharma made a major security corrigendum by revealing his Aadhaar number on Twitter and challenging people to "harm him", another major controversy has landed at the doors of the UIDAI.

This time the effect seems to be that UIDAI's helpline number is being saved by default in most Android device's contact lists. French security researcher Baptiste Robert who goes by the pseudonym Elliot Alderson on Twitter polled his followers to discover out if they had the UIDAI helpline number saved on their telephone without their intervention.

Many users replied to his tweet puzzled, equally they realised the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) toll-complimentary helpline number was already saved, even though they had not saved information technology themselves.

UIDAI is yet to consequence an official argument on this issue which has the helpline number 1947.

Sharma acquired huge uproar on Twitter by sharing his 12-digit Aadhaar number on July 28. Ethical hackers accept since then exposed at least 14 personal details of the TRAI Chairman, including mobile numbers, home address, date of nascency (DoB), PAN number and voter ID, among others. In add-on, the former UIDAI chief has also had to face up a lot of spam authentication OTP letters thanks to his security lapse.

Trying to explicate how the contacts have mysteriously appeared on Android phones, Coding Blocks co-founder Arnav Gupta, who was with Micromax earlier, told Business Standard, "Every Android phone tries to connect to the internet and equally soon as it does, it downloads a basic list of emergency contacts of each land. In India, information technology is distress number 112 and the UIDAI helpline."
